The Yushima Tenjin leads southwest of Ueno Park in Tokyo is the Shinto shrine pays tribute Sugawara no Michizane. He was a scholar, poet, and politician in Heian period (from 794 to 1185) and is known as a person of genius nowadays.
The benefit of this shrine is passing exam and academic success, so many students preparing for exam come here for praying every year. They write their hope high score of exam or admission of high school or university on wooden plate called Ema. Yushima Tenjin is near the Tokyo University (most prestigious and highest ranking university in Japan) , so many students taking the exam for entrancce to Tokyo University come here.
