Market share of wind power generation
Japan got a later start to introduce a wind power generation!
- The world's market size of wind power generation system in 2016 is about six trillion yen.
- Japanese wind power market will be 200 billion yen in 2030 though it in 2016 is only about 32 billion yen.
- Hitachi has the top share of domestic aerogenerator market in Japan.
The world's market size of wind power generation system in 2016 is about six trillion yen(about 60 billion dollars) according to the report of Japanese market research company, Fuji Keizai Co.. It decreased 13.5% from previous year, but it will restart growing from 2017. It will be about ten trillion yen in 2030 according to this report.
The reason of decreasing in 2016 is trends of wind power generation in China and USA. The amount of it introduced in China reached a recrod in 2015, and it accounts for 50% of this market in the world. It decreased in 2016 because of FIT(fee-in tariff) price declining and controls on building a new wind power plant by government. However, the speed of increasing it was reduced only temporarily by government. It will increase along 13th five-year plan of China from 2018.
The amount of wind power generation in USA decreased in 2016 because PTC(Production Tax Credit) may expire at the end of 2015. In late 2015 a large majority in Congress voted to extend the PTC for wind for 5 years. It will recover and increase from 2020 at least.
Europe continues to serve significant role in leading world's wind power generation market from the dawn of it. However, some European countiries changed their policy about it from FIT to bidding system because it takes on root. Especially, countries with severe financial conditions like Italy and Romania are proactive in doing that. Only several countries which keep FIT will increase wind power generation.
On the other hand, Japan got a later start to introduce a wind power generation than above countires. The amount of it introduced in Japan for a year is about 180 thousand kilowatts in 2017. The total amount of it in Japan is only about 3.4 million kilowatts. That accounts only 1% of total annual power generation in Japan.
However, the market size of wind power generation in Japan is increasing year by year because of FIT which began from 2012. There are many wind power generation facilities which do not operate yet. Their electric capacity is estimated to be over six million kilowatts. In addition, there are many project of building wind power generation facilities whose electric capacity is over 15 million kilowatts. It is said that this market's size will be 200 billion yen in 2030 though it in 2016 is only about 32 billion yen.
About the world's aerogenerator market share, Vestas Wind System A/S in Denmark has the top share of this market in 2017. It is expanding this market share, and won a large order from USA in 2017. GE has the second share, Gold Wind has the third share of this market. However, Siemens in Germany and Gamesa in Spain merged in 2017. Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy will have the second share of this market in 2018.
Hitachi has the top share of domestic aerogenerator market in Japan. GE and Enercon GmbH have certain levels of market share in Japan. GE reentered Japanese aerogenerator market in 2014. On the other hand, Eurus Energy is the largest wind power wholesaler in Japan. It is a jointly-owned company of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings and Toyota Ysusho. J-POWER(Electric Power Development Co.) has the second share of wind power generation quantity though it is the largest electric utility in Japan. EcoPower which specializes wind power wholesaler has the thrid share of this market.
Nuclear power generation has run into a lot of flak from the public in Japan since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. It is difficult for electric utilities to not only make a new nuclear but also resume operation of the nuclear power plant that had been stopped. Therefore, there is room for expnading wind power generation as much as nuclear power generation stopped. In addition, FIT of wind power generation is still high though FIT of solar power was reduced.
Hitachi and J-POWER are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Foreign investors can invest in Hitachi on NYSE by ADR(American Depositary Receipt). In addition, they can do them through many ETFs, MAXIS Nikkei 225 ETF(NKY), iShares MSCI Japan ETF(EWJ), Wisdomtree Japan Hedged ETF(DXJ) and more.
